At the extreme western tip of Sicily, in front of the famous "salt road" between Trapani and Marsala, stands the island of San Pantaleo -the ancient Mothia- today located within the nature reserve of the Stagnone lagoon. For centuries, the island has been surrounded by salt pans and it is here that the whole sea salt is "produced". The mineral is still worked by hand following the ancient process dating back to the Phoenicians. Mothia whole sea salt is obtained by evaporation of sea water and dried by the wind and sun of Sicily; washing and purification treatments are carried out only on the surface of the mineral. The non-use of chemical refining allows the salt to preserve the natural content of trace elements, especially iodine, magnesium and potassium. Compared to refined table salt, whole salt has lower concentrations of sodium chloride.

Mothia is an Italian company coming from the purest salt pans of Sicily, between Trapani and Marsala, at the extreme western tip of Sicily where there is the island of San Pantaleo, the ancient Mothia.
